The main risk factors associated with opioid overdose include:

▪ Mixing opioids with other drugs, especially alcohol and benzodiazepines (Xanax®, Valium®, Ativan®)

▪ If a person has not been taking an opioid for an extended period of time and then begins taking it again, such as persons coming out of periods of sobriety in corrections facilities, detox programs, or rehab treatment facilities

▪ Using these medications while alone
