Health Behaviors

Health Determinants

Health behavior refers to a person's beliefs and actions about their health and well-being. Factors like genetics, access to health care, availability of walking trails, sidewalks for walking, gyms for exercising, etc. are part of the issues that can affect a person’s health behaviors. A person’s health behaviors play a large role in their health outcomes. Often, positive health behaviors lead to positive health outcomes, while negative behaviors lead to negative outcomes.

An example of a positive health behavior is exercising and eating sensibly. This behavior can lower the risk of heart disease and diabetes. On the other hand, smoking and excessive drinking are negative health behaviors, and can raise the risk of lung cancer and liver disease.

Sexual Behaviors

Healthy sexual behavior is protecting yourself and your partner from serious health problems, such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancy. It is important for Morrow County adults and youth to stay informed and up-to-date on the latest information about disease prevention and birth control. Having multiple sexual partners, and engaging in sexual activities at an early age, can negatively impact a person’s health outcomes. According to the Morrow County Health Assessment, 18% of adults aged 18 – 30 reported that they had intercourse with more than one partner in the past year. Morrow County youth reported sexual activity, with 25% of youth aged 13 – 17 stating that they had participated in sexual activity. This increased to 64% in youth aged 17 and over reporting sexual activity.

The 2016 Morrow County Community Health Assessment includes survey data about adult and youth sexual behaviors. The data is shown below, broken down by demographic groups of respondents.

The 2016 Morrow County CHA includes survey data about behavior surrounding firearms for both adults and youth. The data is shown below, broken down by demographic groups.

Active Living

Active living is a way of life that adds regular physical activity into your everyday routines, such as walking to the store or biking to work. Recreational opportunities (parks, fitness centers etc.) close to the home or workplace, walking trails and bike lanes for transportation also encourage a more active lifestyle. An active lifestyle can help prevent obesity as well as a number of chronic conditions. Active living promotion is a combination of physical activity and recreation activities aimed at the general public to encourage a healthier lifestyle. In Morrow County, many things that lead to healthy living are limited or do not exist at all. One example is the lack of sidewalks, crosswalks, pedestrian crossing signals and other ways for children to walk safely to and from school. Programs like Safe Routes to School work to address these issues.
