Why Lung Health?

In the Springfield Community, Lung Health was identified as a prioritized health issue due to supporting evidence from secondary data, primary data from hospitals, the feasibility to change the issue and the community readiness to change the issue. In the Springfield Community, 10% of all Emergency Department visits and 18% of all pediatric Emergency Department visits are due to respiratory illness. Improving Lung Health in the Springfield Community will not only prevent diminished quality of life and loss of life, but will also save employers millions of dollars and help to break the impact of Lung Health to future generations.

How Canary Measure Works

1. Neighborhood conditions, health behaviors, and health outcomes related to a particular health issue are identified.

2. Through a process that involves normalizing, weighting and adjusting, the data is refined and compiled to create the Canary Measure for the health issue.

3. The information is then displayed in two ways. One is a series of maps that illustrates how the community is impacted by the health issue and its factors. The second is a chart that illustrates how factors affect neighborhoods.

How to Explore StoryMaps

By clicking the link below an ESRI StoryMap will open.

The tabs across the top of the page include maps specific to each factor studied in the health issue.

You will begin on the Total Score tab which shows how all factors culminate to impact lung health in the community.

Color Coding

The colors in the maps indicate neighborhoods in the community that have high (red), moderately high (orange), low (yellow), or extremely low (green) rates specific to the factor studied.

The colors in the bar charts indicate neighborhood conditions and health behaviors in blue, while health outcomes are green.
