Prescription Drugs

The 2018 Texas School Survey of Drug and Alcohol Use asks students in grades 7 through 12 about their use of prescription drugs. Among the respondents in Region 5:

The Texas School Survey of Drug and Alcohol Use collects self-reported tobacco, alcohol, and substance use data among students (grades 7-12) in Texas public schools on an annual basis. The survey includes questions about specific prescription drugs, as well as more detailed questions about frequency of use.

Region 5 students are more likely to abuse prescription drugs than Texas students overall.

Students in Region 5 reported higher rates of "ever using" every prescription drug in the survey than Texas students as a whole — nearly 25% of Region 5 students have ever used any prescription drug without a prescription, compared to 18.5% of respondents in Texas. The most commonly-abused prescription drug for both Region 5 and Texas students was codeine cough syrup.

Frequency of use in Region 5 varies by grade—and by drug.

For example, opiate-based drugs, such as Oxycontin and Percocet, are much more likely to be abused by high schoolers than younger students. In contrast, the age differences of students abusing codeine cough syrup are not as stark.

Perceived Risks of Prescription Drug Abuse

In addition to usage, the Texas School Survey also measures respondents' perception of the risk of illicitly using prescription drugs. Overall, about 78% of Region 5 students said they considered using such drugs without a prescription as "very dangerous." Attitudes vary modestly by grade level in Region 5, and overall largely match attitudes held by Texan students as a whole.
