This dashboard serves to track patterns in prescription opioid abuse and its consequences, including prevalence of abuse, perceptions regarding use, prescriptions, healthcare utilization, deaths, opioid use disorder treatment, and safe disposal of prescription opioids in Los Angeles County. Data on heroin is also available. This data supports the efforts of SafeMedLA, the prescription drug abuse coalition of Los Angeles County.
Although prescription drugs are legally prescribed by doctors and can be helpful in treating certain conditions they were prescribed for, non-medical use of them is illegal, and can be very dangerous. Prescription opioids are chemically similar to heroin, with similar addiction potential and can lead to serious adverse health outcomes, including respiratory depression induced decreased level of consciousness, seizures, muscle spasms, and death.
