2018 CAASPP Results

The 2018 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) System includes online and paper-based summative assessments. The summative assessments are comprehensive end of year assessments derived from the grade-level learning that measure progress toward college and career readiness. The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress categorize results in four areas – standards exceeded, standards met, standards nearly met and standards not met. The standards exceeded and standards met categories are combined to measure overall student proficiency in each subject area.

In English language arts, the percentage of all county students meeting the state standards was 44 percent – the highest score in four years of CAASPP results. That compares with the statewide standard percentage of 50 percent. In math, the number of county students meeting the statewide standard was 30 percent, also the best in four years of results. The statewide standard proficiency rate was 39 percent.

This year marks the fourth release of the CAASPP data, which replaced the state’s Academic Performance Index for statewide accountability. The scores for CAASPP are now part of the state’s new accountability model – the California School Dashboard – which will have its first full year of released data later this fall.

San Bernardino County Student Overview

The student population for the county is primarily composed of Hispanic/Latino students (64.6 percent), followed by White (17.3 percent) African American (8.4 percent), Asian/Pacific Islander (5.2 percent), Multiracial (2.1 percent) and Native American (0.5 percent). The counts for socio-economically disadvantaged students included 288,979 (71.7 percent) low-income students, 69,194 (17.2 percent) English learners and 3,677 foster youth. Among those tested, the largest four ethnic subgroups – Hispanic/Latino, White, African American/Black and Asians – all showed growth across all grade levels in both English Language Arts and math.

Student Groups

Achievement gaps among the largest subgroups of students remain statewide and at the county level. Among subgroups of students, female county students reached the statewide standards in ELA at 50 percent and 30 percent in math. Male students’ percentages were 39 percent in ELA and 31 percent in math. In addition, county subgroups who met or exceeded standards, Asian students (77 percent in English language arts and 73 percent in mathematics) scored highest, followed by White students (56 percent in English language arts and 42 percent in mathematics), Hispanic students (40 percent in English language arts and 26 percent in mathematics) and African-American students (30 percent in English language arts and 17 percent in mathematics).

CAASPP Results by Grade Level

Elementary school students in Grades 3-5 in San Bernardino County showed the most improvement among students meeting proficiency standards in both English language arts (ELA) and math in results for the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). Results from 2017-2018 school year, showed 3-5 percentage points improvements in three grade levels during the past year. In English language arts, seven grade levels showed the most growth in the past year by increasing proficiency rates by 2 percent. 

College Readiness

Early Assessment Program

The Early Assessment Program (EAP) Network facilitates vertical articulation between the California State University and California Community College, as well as the high schools’ professional development in the areas of language arts and mathematics. Counselors, assessment staff, directors of Curriculum/Instruction and university representatives are core participants in this effort to increase the number of students who successfully enter college without taking remediation classes. The EAP test is embedded in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) 11th-grade English Language Arts and Mathematics and to see how well prepared the 11th-graders are for college.
